Ruakura Inland Port opened in August 2023 to serve Waikato-based importers and exporters. The nine-hectare cargo facility on Hamilton’s eastern boundary is linked by rail to Tauranga and Auckland, giving shippers efficient access to the big ship services calling only at Port of Tauranga.
The $60 million facility was developed by Port of Tauranga in a joint venture with Tainui Group Holdings (TGH) , the commercial entity of the Waikato-Tainui iwi. It is part of the Rukaura Superhub logistics precinct being developed by TGH. Businesses that have already moved into the Superhub include Kmart, which has built a 40,000 sqm distribution centre, and cold storage facilities operated by Maersk and Big Chill.
The inland port is operated by Port of Tauranga subsidiary Quality Marshalling and is expected to handle around 40,000 TEU in the first year of operations.
