Your Safety

The Port of Tauranga is concerned for the safety and well being of all persons who enter the Port. The Port is not a public area and only those whose workplace it is, or who have been authorised to visit, may do so.

 

Children under the age of 15 years are not permitted. All persons who enter the Port shall comply with Port of Tauranga health and safety procedures and the health and safety procedures of the companies and organisations they are visiting. In the interests of your own safety and the safety of others, please read and follow these guidelines at all times.

Statutory Requirements

The entire area within the Port of Tauranga boundaries as published in the NZ Gazette is subjected to legislative regulations that must be complied with. The Maritime Security Act 2004, the Maritime Security Regulations 2004 and theISPS Code form the basis of the statutory requirements.

The entire area of the Port of Tauranga is a Customs Controlled Area and is subject to all regulations imposed by theCustomsand Excise Act 1996 as well as legislative requirementsof MAF Border Control and Ministry of Forestry.

  • Access to the Port of Tauranga will only be granted on presentation of either a Port-issued access pass or presentation of acceptable photographic ID to the security staff at the manned gatehouses.
  • Access to the Tauranga Container Terminal at Sulphur Point is dependent on all persons complying with the Port of Tauranga visitor access procedures (Visitor Register) as detailed. 
  • Every individual seeking access to the Port must produce photographic ID.
  • Access to the Port of Tauranga is conditional upon all persons agreeing to random inspections of vehicles and belongings.
  • Only those persons on authorised business within the Port may have access to the Port.
  • No persons will be granted access to ships without the prior approval of the Master or the Agent.
  • No access will be allowed in to quarantine areas unless authorised by MAF Border Control.
  • No imported goods are permitted to be removed from the Port unless the importer is in possession of an electronic or manually issued Customs Delivery Order. This must be produced before entry to the Port will be granted.

 Accident and Emergencies

  • All fires, emergencies, accidents, oil spills, chemical leaks, vandalism or damage should be immediately reported to the Customer Service Centre on +64 7 572 8888.
  • The Customer Service Centre have procedures in place to notify the appropriate emergency service and to assist them in providing a speedy and efficient response to any emergency.

Motor Vehicles Requirements

  • The maximum speed on Tasman Quay and Wharf Road on the Mount Maunganui side is 40kph.  On every road leading from Tasman Quay or Wharf Road to the berths or through operational areas is 20kph.  These speeds are the maximum speeds permitted but are NOT the mandatory speeds. Care should always be taken while driving on the Port and speeds reduced appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
  • The maximum speed on North Road at Sulphur Point is 30kph.  This maximum speed limit applies from the Sulphur Point Security Gate House to Cool Stores Nelson (CSN).  From CSN North to Berth 25 and from the beginning of East Road to Berth 23 the speed limit is 20kph.  These speeds are the maximum speeds permitted but are NOT the mandatory speeds.  Care should always be taken while driving on the Port and speeds reduced appropriate to the prevailing conditions.
  • It is recommended that all vehicles being driven on the Port have their headlights on.
  • Remember heavy cargo handling equipment may be encountered in all areas at any time.
  • Cargo handling equipment has restricted visibility and motor vehicles should pull over, give way or stop to ensure maximum clearance.
  • Vehicles which have to enter operational areas must use extreme caution and be equipped with an approved flashing hazard light on top of the vehicle.
  • Parking is confined to designated parking areas.
  • Under no circumstances are vehicles permitted to drive along the wharf apron past working vessels.
  • Vehicle access to berths must be by the designated accessways.

Taxis

  • Taxis will generally drop their customers at Rata Street, Hull Road or Sulphur Point gatehouses. Customers will be transported by Port shuttle bus from the gate to shipside.
  • Taxis that are permitted to enter the Port will only be permitted to drive on Wharf Road or Tasman Quay to transport customers to businesses whose offices are on these roads.
  • On special occasions, taxis may transport customers to the shipside. On these occasions, a Port security van will escort the taxi to shipside.
  • Every taxi driver and every taxi occupant must produce photographic identification before entry to the Port will be permitted.

Commercial Vehicles and Contractors

  • No vehicles are permitted to enter the Container Terminal Operational area without the prior consent of the Terminal Supervisor.
  • All vehicles operating on the Port must have hazard lights operating as a minimum requirement. Flashing roof lights are recommended on all vehicles operating within the Port.
  • Transport operators unfamiliar with the Port of Tauranga are to advise Security Staff at the gatehouse of their destination. They shall obtain a Port Map and Port induction handout before proceeding.
  • Drivers must wear high visibility safety clothing when not in their cabs.
  • Drivers must, whenever possible, park off the designated roadways to secure/unsecure or cover/uncover their loads.
  • Passengers who are authorised to be on the Port must remain in the truck at all times unless directed to vacate.
  • Port Security should be contacted when there is a requirement to move over-dimension, overweight cargoes or for any activity necessitating cranage.

Personal Safety Equipment

  • All persons entering or working in operational areas must wear high visibility safety clothing and hard hats as a minimum. Additional safety clothing shall be worn as required by their companies' health and safety policy.

Pedestrians

  • All pedestrians walking from designated car parks to their places of employment should keep to the yellow walkways and should wear high visibility clothing at all times.
  • Pedestrians must not enter cargo storage/operational areas unless accompanied by Port of Tauranga staff or authorised personnel.
  • Walking to and from ships is not permitted. The Port operates a shuttle bus service to transport crew and visitors from shipside to wharf gates.

Contractors

  • All contractors working in the Port are required to attend a safety briefing prior to commencing work. Hazards will be identified for the safety of all. Please consult your Port contact for these briefings.
