Advice to Ships Masters

The Harbourmaster has discontinued the recommended route that was established when the Rena broke in two. The Rena exclusion zone still applies and you will find the details of this in the attached Notice to Mariners.

There have been no reported problems with Rena debris for over two weeks. In addition, any containers and large pieces of debris spotted in the aftermath of the vessel breaking up have sunk, been recovered or are accounted for and pose no danger.

Contingency Plan During Ports of Auckland Strike

As a result of the proposed strike and lockout at Ports of Auckland for four days from 10.30 pm Thursday 1 December to 10.30 pm Monday 5 December, we have been asked by the operators of a number of shipping services if we can assist them. We have been working with Ports of Auckland and KiwiRail to establish a solution that will minimise the impact of the industrial action as well as the potential impact to Port of Tauranga's existing services. Exclusion Zone Reduced

The following was released by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council on Friday. This amendment allows the Port to operate normally in all aspects except for ships arriving from the east which need to navigate outside the new reduced zone. Anchorages 1, 2 and 3 have been reinstated.

In consultation with the appropriate authorities, Bay of Plenty Regional Council's Harbourmaster has amended the exclusion zone off the Bay of Plenty coast from midnight on Friday 18 November 2011.

The Harbourmaster has directed that the area of sea within three nautical miles of the grounded vessel Rena is closed to unauthorised vessels or persons. The area of the exclusion zone has been reduced because the oil and containers coming from the grounded Rena cargo ship are currently contained, reducing the risk of injury or damage due to navigational safety hazards.

Contingency Plan in Place for Port

There have been concerns overnight that with the wind and sea conditions, the ship would break up and/or further containers would be released. Although this has not occurred, Maritime New Zealand has engaged the P & I Club and Braemar Howells Limited to ensure there is a contingency plan in place and that resources are standing by to be mobilised in the event of the further loss of containers and/or the break-up of the ship.

Should containers release from the vessel, priority will be given to ensuring the Port of Tauranga is kept clear and any potential hazards to navigation are cleared.

Port Status Update 25 October, 5 pm

It remains "business as usual" at the port. We are very busy currently with three cruise ships due this week and 13 ships alongside tomorrow.

No further containers have been lost overboard from the vessel. Multi-beam sonar surveys over the weekend have located a further seven containers close to the Rena which reduces the number of containers unaccounted for to 16. This multi-beam sonar survey is continuing and is expected more of the currently unaccounted for containers will be found around Motiti Island.

Update to Shipping Agents Lines 21 October 5pm

Further to our last customer update (4.30 pm today), following are the co-ordinates of the amended exclusion zone:

1 Rabbit Island (Motuotau) at Mount Maunganui in position 37° 37.8'S 176° 11.7'E to
2 37°28.5'S 176°20'E to
3 37°28.5'S 176°30'E to
4 37°38.6'S 176°30'E to
5 Coast at the Kaituna cut 37°44.8'S 176°24.6'E

The Harbourmaster advises that the exclusion zone was amended because the debris and containers coming from the grounded Rena cargo ship are currently contained, reducing the risk of injury or damage due to navigational safety hazards. Vessel operators are reminded to keep an active look-out for the response vessels assisting with the Rena situation, and to avoid disrupting the operations.

Port Operations Update

As previously advised, we don't want to bombard you with updates, but we have had favourable feedback from customers who want us to continue them on a regular basis.

There has been no further loss of containers from the vessel today and aerial reconnaissance has not identified any floating or semi-submerged containers. Accordingly, we have reduced the frequency of the side scanning sonar and magnetometer surveys of the shipping channels to once daily. This can be ramped up again at short notice if the situation changes.

Port Operations Update

As mentioned on Saturday, the Port of Tauranga / Navy side scan sonar and magnetometer are producing excellent results in terms of our ability to detect sub-surface objects. The magnetometer can detect full containers from a distance of over 250m and broken up containers at nearly 200m distance. We can detect the containers under the surface, mid water column or on the seabed. [ 17th October 2011 ]

Port Operations Continue as Normal
