Exporting New Zealand
Containers
Much of what we export is sent out of the country in large metal boxes called containers. Goods like meat, pulp and dairy products are exported this way.
Why are containers used and who came up with the idea of putting everything in boxes?
Export containers arrive at the port by truck or rail (QuickTime .mov). They are unloaded and stacked into neat rows using a special machine called a straddle (QuickTime .mov).
Every movement and a complete description of the container is recorded electronically. Controllers at the port container terminal can identify the contents, weight and location of any container at any given time.
