Port Status Update

Containers did find their way into shipping channels this morning and were removed. We continue to use the specialised sonar equipment to sweep the main shipping channels out to the pilot boarding ground. Debris from the ship has also been observed off the port.

In view of the above, we have made the decision to temporarily suspend marine operations at 2100 today and recommence at 0600 tomorrow. The suspension of marine operations will affect two ships, the Australia Express and the Kota Jati as we have been able to re-arrange other shipping movements. The two cruise ships, Volendam and Pacific Dawn, will sail this evening as scheduled.

We have had an excellent response from Maritime New Zealand and the Navy to ensure the continued operations of the port. As of 1800 this evening, Maritime New Zealand will undertake aerial reconnaissance of the current recommended shipping route between the pilot boarding area and Mayor Island. The Navy will provide us with additional equipment and manpower to enable us to provide 24 hour surveillance of the shipping channels. This will give us the best information to allow decision making in respect of on-going marine operations.

There have been media reports that the port is closed. This is not the case. Further, we have given our commitment that we will contact our customers directly before making any such decision.

While there may be times, such as tonight, where we need to suspend marine operations for a few hours, we have the capability and the plans in place to ensure there will be no sustained business interruption. We would inform you if this position were to change.
