Port's Tauranga Container Terminal Expands
Posted on 22nd August 2008
Plans are under way to expand the Tauranga Container Terminal operational area by 1.3 hectares. The expansion, which will easily extend onto adjacent land, will provide the Port with over 400 additional container ground slots. The Tauranga Container Terminal hard-stand area, comprising 14.7 hectares and currently 3,462 ground slots, has remained unchanged since the pavement was constructed and the Terminal was opened in 1992.
The expansion, which will begin this month, is a result of a 10% compounding annual growth rate of containers through the Terminal since 2000. Additional drivers for the expansion include the arrival of the 5th Liebherr crane in March 2009 and an increase in the consolidation of export cargo through Port of Tauranga.
It is expected that expansion of the hard-stand will be completed by September this year, followed closely by the installation of three new light towers.
Mark Cairns, Chief Executive, Port of Tauranga, said "The volume growth has progressively put pressure on the Terminal storage area during peak periods and expansion is required to maintain efficient Terminal operations. One of the major strengths of the Port is that that we can incrementally expand as required, at relatively low capital cost. We currently have an additional 29 hectares of land positioned adjacent to the Terminal which can be used for Port operations in the future."
