Grounding Update to Shipping Agents and Lines
Posted on 13th October 2011
Further to our previous updates the Bay of Plenty Harbour Master recommends the following:
- That vessel approach the Port of Tauranga from a position 5 nautical miles due west of Mayor Island light (position 37o18.6'S 176o09.2'E) and then direct to the pilot boarding station.
- Departing vessels are advised to proceed from the pilot boarding station and keep to the west of Mayor Island.
- All vessels are advised to keep a good look out for floating containers. We have commenced "sweeps" of the channel using side scan sonar and magnetometer devices towed astern of the Te Awanui that the route is clear of obstructions. There is a lot of debris floating in the water off the Port entrance.
- The extent of oil, containers and debris is being monitored and we will advise further information when it becomes available. There have been no further reports from the vessel over night.
- Weather conditions have improved considerably.
