First vessel in new Hamburg Sud service calls Tauranga

Posted on 3rd March 2006

Container line Hamburg Sud will this weekend celebrate its first stand-alone shipping service in 20 years with the arrival of the 1850 TEU vessel Cap Victor at the Port of Tauranga.

The Cap Victor is the first vessel to arrive at the port as part of Hamburg Sud’s new Trident service which is calling Tauranga as part of a fast fortnightly connection to the United States’ east coast and Europe.

With Tauranga as the last port call in the service, exporters through the port now enjoy one of the fastest transit times available to the US east coast.

The Trident service calls Timaru, Napier, and Tauranga before leaving New Zealand for Cartagena in Columbia, the US east coast and Europe.

Simon Edwards, General Manager Commercial for Hamburg Sud in New Zealand, said that for the last 20 years the shipping line had operated as part of various consortia, most recently the ANZ Alliance, which was disbanded last year following changes in the international shipping scene.

“With the decision to go back to independent operations we are now completely in charge of our own decisions, including port calls,” he said.

“Tauranga’s location in the midst of the vast dairying and meat producing hinterland is ideal for our final export port call.”

Port of Tauranga Chief Executive Mark Cairns welcomed the new service, saying the fast transit times offered by the Trident service would be particularly attractive to exporters of time-sensitive products.

Hamburg Sud was the first shipping line to offer container services in 1971. It is also the largest carrier between North America and South America.
