Posted on 2nd November 2011

Braemar Howells has four tugs standing by in Tauranga and a further two are in the vicinity of the Rena.

For the open water / sea response, there are six boats capable of recovery operations in seas up to 2.5 to 3.5 metres and 25 knot winds. Four of the vessels will have a two man dive team on board for in-water connection and buoy tagging. Hi-viz Dan buoys will be attached to any drifting containers.

For inshore and harbour areas, there are an additional four vessels capable of working in seas of up to 1.5 to 2.5 metres and an additional dive support vessel for tagging in water, connection and anchoring. Anchor sites for containers are located to the West of Motiti Island and North East of Rabbit Island.

Currently there is one fixed wing twin engine SAR aircraft and one five seat Squirrel helicopter on charter for aerial observation and assistance. There are also additional assets already in service for the recovery of beached containers.

Shipping movements and cargo operations continue at the Port as normal.

The situation is being monitored continually and we will advise you if there is any change.
