Consolidation of Hamburg Sud Trident and Maersk OC1 Services

Posted on 18th March 2008

The decision by Hamburg Sud and Maersk to consolidate their East Coast North America services comes as no surprise as shipping lines move to reduce their over-tonnaging in a number of trade lanes.

Port of Tauranga Chief Executive, Mark Cairns, said that today’s announcement will mean that from June, vessel calls through Tauranga will reduce by around 78 and throughput will drop by approximately 20,000 containers annually.

“Both Hamburg Sud and Maersk will continue to have a strong presence in Tauranga, calling weekly on the newly configured service,” he said.

“The Port of Tauranga has a very strong cargo base.  Given the wide range of container shipping line services through the Port, importers and exporters continue to have a wide range of opportunities to use New Zealand’s most efficient port.”
